About the Coordinator

Let me introduce myself and let you know why this group began. My name is Nancy Spears. I have spent years unknowingly poisoning my husband, my three daughters, and one of my sons with homemade pancakes, waffles, cookies, and cakes (My oldest son is still in denial, thus far escaping diagnosis). I understand the feelings that many of you go through as your children are diagnosed celiac. Twelve years ago, I cried in the pasta isle at a local Meijer store and read labels until I could hardly see.

Me with my husbandI had no idea what this hereditary disease was until my husband, Dan, was diagnosed more than twelve years ago. So, I learned how to cook and bake all over again. I am gluten free by choice, since it is so much easier for me at home. I am DQ2 positive, and have thyroid issues, so I contributed to my family's plight.

GranddaughterIn October of 2006, the first of my grandchildren, Rosalie, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. In Novemeber, her biopsy confirmed celiac disease. We had been pretty sure about the celiac disease for quite awhile prior, but the diabetes was a surprise. So we have learned to count carbs, test blood, and give shots. She is now on a pump, which has simplified things incredibly. Since then, I have met several other parents who have had celiac diabetic kids.

My church, Anchor Baptist Church, has taken on this challenge as a ministry opportunity. They have fully supported the beginning of a Celiac Kids Support Group, which meets at the church. The Gluten Free Food Fair has become a highlight of our ministry. This event is fully sponsored by the church to allow people to attend with no admission fee, and vendors at a small fee for their tables. Each year the event has grown, adding new features and more people attending.

I hope to meet you soon. Everyone has a story--I would love to hear yours.

-Nancy
